Elmer W. DANO

Obituary (from newspaper of 1 July 1961):  CLAYTON---Elmer W. Dano, 72, formerly of Grindstone Island, died at 4 this morning at his home on the Green Settlement Road, Adams Cemter.  He had suffered asthma and a heart condition for  three
years, and had been confined to his home the past week.

    The funeral will be Monday afternoon at 1 at the Cummings Funeral Home here.  Burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery,

    Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving Mr. Dano are his wife, Mrs. Eunice Carnegie Dano; his mother, Mrs. Jennie Dano, of this village; two brothers, Clark, Clayton, and Kenneth, LaFargeville; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Lottie) Slate, LaFargeville, and Mrs. Gerald
(Evelyn) Parker, Clayton; a son, Elmer C., Green Settlement Road, Adams Center; two daughters, Mrs. David (Hildred) Garnsey, Grindstone Island, and Mrs. Edward (Alta) Hasseler, Thousand Island Park; three grandchildren, and three
great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Dano was born Nov. 24, 1888, in Canada, a son of Frank and Jennie Lindsey Dano.  When a young man he moved to Grindstone Island with his family.  He operated a dairy farm, until moving to Adams Center four years ago.


Eunice CARNEGIE

Obituary (from newspaper of 12 Nov. 1974):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Eunice C. Dano, 84, Adams Center, Route 1, a native and former resident of Grindstone Island and widow of Elmer W. Dano, died at 7 p.m. Monday in the Samaritan-Keep Home, Watertown.
She had been admitted to the House of the Good Samaritan six months ago and was later transferred to the Samaritan-Keep Home.

    The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, Rev. Richard E. Barton, pastor, Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday.

    She is survived by a son, Elmer C., Adams Center, Route 1; two daughters, Mrs. David (Hildred) Garnsey, Adams Center; and Mrs. Edward (Alta) Hasseler, Watertown, Route 3; a sister, Mrs. Edith Rose, Central Square, three grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.

    Born on Grindstone Island Jan. 19, 1890, daughter of James and Ann Slate Carnegie, she attended school on the island and was married to Elmer W. Dano Sept. 15, 1910, on Grindstone Island.

    The couple operated a dairy farm on Grindstone Island until 1956 when they moved to the Green Settlement Road, Adamds Center.

     Mr. Dano died July 1, 1961, at the age of 72 years.


Leslie B. CARNEGIE

Obituary (from newspaper of 9 Aug. 1928):  Leslie Carnegie, 47, of Grindstone Island and one of the best-known residents of this section, died Friday afternoon at the House of the Good Samaritan in Watertown following an illness of about one
week caused from mastoiditis.  For a time Mr. Carnegie was improving rapidly and was making preparations on returning to his home.  He suffered a sudden relapse when meningitis developed on Thursday and passed away the following day.

    Mr. Carnegie, who was born on Grindstone Island, June 16, 1881, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Carnegie, had spent his entire life in this locality.  He has sailed the Great Lakes and for many years was employed by T.A. Gillespie as pilot
of the yacht "Jean."  The past seven years he has been operating a ferry business of his own between this village and Grindstone and held the contract for transporting U.S. Mail.  He had built up a fine business for himself through hard work
and courteousness to his patrons and was highly respected by all who knew him.

   In 1908 he was married to Miss Ella Brown of Grindstone.  Two children were born to the union, a daughter and son.

   Mr. Carnegie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clayton, the local lodge of Masons and Clayton Grange.

    Surviving him are his wife, Ella Brown Carnegie; one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Conant of Grindstone; one son, Roy Carnegie of Grindstone; two brothers, Corbett and Paul Carnegie of Grindstone, and six sisters, Mrs. May Sherboneau of Watertown,
Mrs. Anna Faust of Grindstone, Mrs. Ernest Brown of Grindstone, Mrs. Edith Rose of Syracuse, and a sister Alice of Rockport.

    Funeral services were conducted from his late home on Grindstone Sunday afternoon at 2 with Rev. William Adam of the local Baptist Church officiating.  Interment was made in the family plot in Grindstone Cemetery.


Ella J. BROWN

Obituary:  CLAYTON---The funeral for Ella J. Carnegie, 94, of 512 Webb St., will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cummings Funeral Home, with Rev. Dale E. Austin, pastor of the Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.  Spring burial will be in
St. Lawrence Cemetery, Cape Vincent.

    Mrs. Carnegie died Saturday at the United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton.

    Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.  Memorial donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Garland (Florence) Garnsey, Canton; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    A son, Roy L. Carnegie, died in May 1981.  Twelve brothers and sisters also died before her.

    Born on Grindstone Island Dec. 29, 1893, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Parker Brown, she was educated on Grindstone Island.

    She married Leslie Carnegie in Clayton in 1910.  He died Aug. 3, 1928.

    Mrs. Carnegie was employed by Hawn's Knitting Mill for 42 years.

    She was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church.  She had been a member of the Clayton Order of the Eastern Star since 1929, was a member of the Clayton Rebekah Lodge and was a past president of the Clayton Senior Citizens.


Alice CARNEGIE

Obituary (from Thousand Islands News of 19 Sept. 1973):  Mrs. Alice Clow, a native of Clayton, died at Brockville General Hospital Aug. 27.  Funeral services were held at Lansdowne Aug. 29 with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Brockville.

    In failing health for two years, Mrs. Clow was a resident of the Gananoque Nursing Home before entering the two weeks prior to her death.

    She was born in Clayton Jan. 6, 1883, a daughter of the late James and Anna Slate Carnegie.  She was twice married.  Her first husband Charles Andress died a number of years ago.  Her second husband David Clow died in 1939.

   She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eunice Dano of Adams Center and Mrs. Edith Rose of Brewerton, and several nieces and nephews.  A brother Paul Carnegie, predeceased her.

Roy L. CARNEGIE

Obituary (from Town & Country News of 27 May 1981):  A memorial service for Roy L. Carnegie, 65, was held Wednesday at the Clayton Methodist Church.  Rev. Robert Nay, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Cape Vincent.

    Mr. Carnegie, 512 Webb St., Clayton, a retired Great Lakes sailor, was pronounced dead on arrival Monday afternoon at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay after he was stricken at his home.

    Arrangements were with the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.

    Surviving are his wife, Norine Carnegie, Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Jeannine Calzada, Flora Springs, Fla., and Mrs. Theodore (Dorine) Bogenschutz, Mardate, Fla.; his mother, Mrs. Ella Carnegie, Clayton; a sister, Mrs. Garland (Florence)
Garnsey, Canton; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

    Born in Watertown, Jan. 19, 1916, the son of Leslie and Ella Brown Carnegie, he attended Clayton Schools and worked for five years as a chef in the Oswego area.  He married Norine E. Spencer, March 2, 1941 in Alexandria Bay.

    Mr. Carnegie worked for many years as a mate on Great Lake freighters and for eight years worked as a meat cutter at the American Store in Clayton before returning to the freighters.  He retired in 1959.

    He was a member of the Clayton Masons for 44 years and the Clayton Methodist Church.


Norine E. SPENCER

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of Sunday, 9 Sept. 1999):  CLAYTON---A memorial service for Norine E. Carnegie, 84, of 512 Webb St., will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph A. DeGroote, pastor,
officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent.

    Mrs. Carnegie died Thursday night at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Tuesday.

    There will be no calling hours.  Arrangements are with T.R. Jetty Funeral Home.

    Mrs. Carnegie was hostess at the Edgewood Resort, Alexandria Bay, for many years, retiring in 1981.

    Born Aug. 13, 1915, at Alexandria Bay, daughter of Ross and Lulu Handschuh Spencer, she graduated from Alexandria Bay schools.

    She married Roy Carnegie on March 2, 1941, at the Alexandria Bay home of her grandparents.  He died in May 1981.

    Mrs. Carnegie was life member of Order of the Eastern Star, was a member of the Alexandria Bay Senior Citizens and was active in women's bowling leagues.

    Surviving are twin daughters, Mrs. Warner (Jeannine) Young, Clayton, and Mrs. Maurice (Dorine) Rodgers, Deerfield Beach, Fla., two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

    Donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund or Clayton United Methodist Church.
