Ethel Mae HELMER

Obituary (from newspaper of 27 Dec. 1965):  Mrs. Ethel Mae Calhoun, 60, until recently of 424 State St., Watertown, died at 7:25 Sunday morning at her home on the Howe St. Road near Black River after a long illness.  She was the widow of Ernest
G. Calhoun, sr., of this city.

    The funeral will be Wednesday morning at 11 at the home.  Rev. Henry W. Gair, pastor of the Christian Church of Christ, will officiate.  Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the home this afternoon and evening and Tuesday at their convenience.

    Members of the family have requested those wishing to send tributes, to contribute to the Christian Church of Watertown in Mrs. Calhoun's name.

    Surviving Mrs. Calhoun are four children, Ernest G. Calhoun, jr., 104 South Massey St., and Mrs. Kenneth A. (Eleanor M.) Carr, Miss Rebecca L. Calhoun, and Miss Ethel Mae Calhoun, all of the Howe St. Road, Black River; ten grandchildren;
two sisters, Mrs. K. Myra Pitsley, Baggs Corners, and Mrs. Mellie I. Gilbo, Hotel Woodruff; Elson Helmer, sr., Union St., Watertown, Maurice E. Helmer, sr., Arsenal St. Road, and Donald C. Helmer, Syracuse.  Two other brothers, Roscoe and
Arthur Helmer, and a sister, Leta Helmer, died in childhood.

    Mrs. Calhoun, who had been confined to her bed most of the time for the past six months, had been suffering from abdominal ailments, including the intestines and liver.

    The family moved from 424 State St. to the Howe St. Road, near Black River, three weeks ago.

    She was born at Ellisburg Aug. 12, 1905, a daughter of Benjamin and Flora Cole Helmer.  As a child she moved with her parents to Watertown and later to Sandy Creek.  She was educated in Watertown schools.

    She was married, first, to Wesley P. Weaver Aug. 14, 1920, at Henderson.  Her 21-year-old husband and her father, then 50 years old, were killed when the motorcycle on which they were riding collided head-on with an automobile near Adams
Center Sept. 3, 1920, less than three weeks after she was married to Mr. Weaver.

    Subsequently, she returned to this city from Sandy Creek and on Oct. 16, 1922, she was married to Ernest G. Calhoun of Clayton at Brownville.  For a few years Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun lived at Clayton and then moved to this city.  Mr. Calhoun,
a veteran of World War I, died at his home here April 1, 1940, at the age of 51.  Mrs. Calhoun continued to reside here until she moved to the Howe St. Road, near Black River, three weeks ago.

    Her mother died here at the age of 73 on Sept. 23, 1945.


James Corbett CARNEGIE

Obituary:  CLAYTON, Sept. 15---J. Corbett Carnegie, 68, 513 1/2 Alexandria St., Clayton, retired farmer and St. Lawrence River man, died Wednesday evening at 8:30 at the Sunmount Veterans Hospital, Tupper Lake, of a heart attack.  He had been a
patient at the hospital for one week and had suffered from a heart condition for the past three years.

    The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Clayton Methodist Church, with Rev. Russell E. Little, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, Friday and Saturday
from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Masonic services will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 8 p.m.  Military rites will be conducted at Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy M. Garnsey Carnegie, four daughters, Mrs. Melburn (Eleanor Ruby) Washburn, Mountain Grove, Mo.;  Mrs. Richard (Mary Elizabeth) Jordan, Cincinnati, O.; Mrs. Allen (Emma Louise) Hower, Jupiter, Fla.; and
Mrs. Robert (Joan Frances) Bush, Wellesville; a brother, Paul, Clayton; four sisters, Mrs. Alice Clow, Rockport, Ont.; Mrs. Edith Rose, Syracuse; Mrs. Elmer (Eunice) Dano, Adams Center; and Mrs. Frances Brown, Clayton; and six grandchildren.  A
son, Staff Sgt. Corbett L. Carnegie was killed in World War II.

    Mr. Carnegie was born on Grindstone Island, July 20, 1892, a son of James and Ann Slate Carnegie.  He attended schools on the island and was married to Dorothy M. Garnsey May 22, 1922, in the Clayton Methodist parsonage by Rev. William
Gardner.  He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Clayton Masonic Lodge, No. 296, F. and A.M.

Obituary (from newspaper of 18 Nov. 1982):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Dorothy M. Carnegie, 77, of Riverview Apts., died Wednesday afternoon at E.J. Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.  She had been stricken ill at home earlier in the day.

    Funeral services will be Saturday morning at the convenience of the family at the Cummings Funeral Home, John St.  Rev. Robert Nay, of the Clayton Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    There will be no calling hours.

    Donations in her name may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Aumbulance Fund.

    Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Emma Louise) Zavitz, Stuart, Fla., Mrs. Eleanor Ruby Washburn, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Robert F. (Mary Elizabeth) House, Clayton, Mrs. Joan C. Roche, Bath; and nine grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Four sisters and three brothers died before her.

    She was born June 19, 1905 on Grindstone Island, the daughter of Hubbard and Martha Garnsey.

    She was educated on Grindstone Island and was married to James Corbett Carnegie May 22, 1922 in the Clayton Methodist parsonage.

    Mr. Carnegie died Sept. 14, 1960.

    She worked at the now defunct Hawns Knitting Mill.

    She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Depauville, and was affiliated with the Methodist Church.

    The funeral was held Sunday at the Cummings Funeral Home with the Rev. John Joslyn, Pastor of Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.  Spring burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., 714 Washington St., Watertown, 13601.

    Surviving are a son, James R. House, Clayton; a daughter, Diane M. Jordan, Clayton; three sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Washburn, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Emma Zavitz, Texas, and Mrs. Joan Roache, Bath, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    A brother, Lloyd Carnegie, died previously.

    She was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Gananoque, Ont., a daughter of Corbett and Dorothy Garnsey Carnegie.  She was educated on Grindstone Island and at Clayton High School.

    Mrs. House was a homemaker.

    Marriages to Richard Jordan and Robert House ended in divorce.

    She was a member of Clayton United Methodist Church and Clayton American Legion Colon-Couch Post 821 Auxiliary.
