Clarence INGERSON

Obituary (from newspaper of 9 Dec. 1936):  CLAYTON---Clarence Ingerson, 57, died at 7:40 Tuesday evening at his home on James St.  He suffered a stroke at 10 Tuesday morning which was the cause of his death.

    He was born at St. Lawrence Aug. 22, 1879, a son of Horace and Martha Ingerson.  During his boyhood he attended school in St. Lawrence.  He was married in 1899 to Luella Comins, who died in 1900.  He was married to Ida L. Kellogg on Dec.
14, 1902.

    Mr. Ingerson has been a prominent contractor and builder in the vicinity of Clayton for many years.  He is a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.

    He is survived by his widow; two sons, Earl and Stanley of Clayton; one sister, Cora Allen, town of Orleans; three grandchildren, Gerald, Leo, and Richard Ingerson, and several nieces.

    The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at the home with the Rev. Royal B. Fishbeck officiating.  Burial will be made in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.


Lois A. DODGE

Obituary (from newspaper of Thursday, 20 Sept. 1990):  CLAYTON---Lois M. Dodge, 68, formerly of Grindstone Island, died at 12:07 p.m. Wednesday at the Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Jan. 15, 1982.

    A memorial service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Cummings Funeral Home with the Rev. John P. Love, pastor of the United Church of Cape Vincent, officiating.  The body will be cremated.  Burial will be in Grindstone Island Cemetery.

    There will be no calling hours.  Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department.

    Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Mary) Ingerson, Cape Vincent, and Mrs. Robert (Florence) Purvis, Watertown, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Three brothers, Norman J. Dodge, R. James Dodge, and William E. Dodge, and two sisters, Hazel LeClair and Avous Couch, died previously.

    She was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Clayton, a daughter of Emmett and Nelli Cummings Dodge.  She was a graduate of Clayton High School.

    She married George Hogate.  The marriage ended in divorce.

    Miss Dodge was employed as a waitress at McCormick's Restaurant and Walroth's Restaurant.  She later moved to Topeka, Kan., where she lived and worked for a number of years.

    She later returned to make her home on Grindstone Island in 1979.

    She was a former member of the Grindstone Island Methodist Church and the Clayton American Legion Auxiliary, Colon-Couch Post 821.


Roland James DODGE

Obituary (from Town and Country News section of the Watertown Daily Times of 21 July 1982):  The funeral for Roland J. Dodge, 62, was held Tuesday at Lynn Haven Chapel of the Smith Funeral Home, Lynn Haven, Fla.

    Mr. Dodge, 1219 Lynn Haven, native of Clayton, died Sunday, July 18, 1982 at his residence.

    Surviving are his wife, Norma Ellen; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Elizabeth Pecori, Lynn Haven; a son, James Norman, Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandsons; five sisters, Mrs. Avous Couch and Mrs. Hazel LeClair of Clayton, Mrs. Florence Purvis and
Mrs. Lois Holgate of Watertown, and Mrs. Mary Ingerson, Cape Vincent, and his twin brother, Norman John, Grindstone Island.

    Mr. Dodge was born in Clayton Aug. 21, 1919, a son of Emmett and Nellie Cummings Dodge.

    Mr. Dodge and his brother served in the Navy during World War II.

    Roland Dodge had worked as a carpenter for marinas in the Clayton area before moving to Florida years ago.


William H. COUCH

1  CMNT Killed as a result of a snowmobile accident


Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 31 Jan. 1970):  CLAYTON---William H. Couch, 56, Clayton-Alexandria Bay Road, service station operator and general mechanic, died Satruday in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where had had been
admitted  Jan. 25 with chest and internal injuries suffered when a snowmobile he was driving collided with a truck on Route 12 near Clayton.

    The funeral was today at 2 p.m. at Clayton United Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Reynolds, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the spring in Clayton Cemetery.

    Surviving, besides his widow, Mrs. Avous M. Dodge Couch, are a son, William H., Jr., Holly; two brothers, Ivan Couch, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Raymond Couch, Clayton; two sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Mildred) Eiben, Silver Springs, Md., and Mrs.
Lawrence (Erma) Gifford, Clayton; and three grandchildren.

    Born at Clayton, March 24, 1913, a son of Ivan and Harriet Richter Couch, he had been a life resident of this section.

    His second marriage was to Miss Avous M. Dodge, Grindstone Island, on Jan. 19, 1957 at Antwerp with Justice of the Peace Charles Oxley officiating.

    Before becoming owner of a service station, he had been employed by Kittle Motors, C.H. Good, Clayton, and by the Daytona Beach Boat Works and the Fish Carburetor of Daytona, Fla.  Mr. Couch was a member of the Colon-Couch Post of the
American Legion, Clayton.


Avous M. DODGE

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 15 March 1985):  CLAYTON---Memorial services for Mrs. Avous M. Couch, 71, Clayton-Alexandria Bay Road, will be held at a later date.

    Donations may be made in her name to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.  Arrangements are with the T. R. Jetty Funeral Home.

    Mrs. Couch died Wednesday morning in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she had been admitted Dec. 12.

   She is survived by a brother, John Dodge, Clayton; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Tiny) Purvis, Watertown, Mrs. Hazel LeClair, Ogdensburg, Mrs. Earl (Mary) Ingerson, Cape Vincent, and Miss Lois Dodge, Samaritan-Keep Home, Watertown; nieces and
nephews.

    Born Feb. 26, 1914 in Clayton, a daughter of Emmett and Nellie Cummings Dodge, she married William Couch Jan. 19, 1957 at Antwerp.  He died in 1970.

    Mrs. Couch was the owner and operator of Couch's service station, Clayton-Alexandria Bay Road.


Joseph CERWINS

Obituary (from newspaper of 14 Sept. 1977):  Funeral services for Lt. Col. (ret.) Joseph M. Cerwins, 72, were held Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.  Burial was in Clayton Cemetery.

    Mr. Cerwins, retired Army colonel, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1977 at his home on the Clayton-LaFargeville Road.

    He had been a Clayton resident for most of the years since the end of World War II.

    He is survived by his wife, Esther Cerwins, Champlain; his former wife, Mrs. Rita Nuijens, Kendall, three daughters, Mrs. Frank (Carole) Moneau, Jupiter, Fla., Mrs. Ron (Janet) Knight, Rochester, and Mrs. Mike (Brenda) Bevens, Watertown; a
son, Robert Cerwins, Arlington, Texas, and seven grandchildren.

    He was born in Schenectady Oct. 23, 1904, son of Joseph and Frances Cerwins, and was graduated from Schenectady High School.  He entered the Army as a private in February, 1933 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in June of that year.
He was ordered to active duty as a captain Aug. 29, 1941, and served for 26 months in the European Theater as battalion and regimental commander.

    He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in December, 1946, served in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty, and retired from the Army July 1, 1960.

    He married Rita Hutchinson of Clayton in 1938.  The marriage ended in divorce.  He subsequently married Esther Hutchinson Reed.


Joseph CERWINS

Obituary (from newspaper of 14 Sept. 1977):  Funeral services for Lt. Col. (ret.) Joseph M. Cerwins, 72, were held Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.  Burial was in Clayton Cemetery.

officiating.  Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

    Mrs. Nuijens died Dec. 27 in the House of the Good Samaritan, where she had been a patient since Nov. 26.

    Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Brenda) Bevens and Mrs. Carole Moneau, both of Jupiter, Fla., and Mrs. Peter (Janet) Mills, Holey; a son, Robert J. Cerwins, Arlington, Tex.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Virginia Bates, Arkport, and a
step-son, Thomas Nuijens, Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Claude Hutchinson, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Roland Hutchinson, West Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Esther Cerwins, Rouses Point, and
several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Six brothers, Edward, Morris, Charles, James, Norman, and Gordon Hutchinson, and two sisters, Leota Lindsay, and Ruth Farr, died before her.

    Born Apr. 19, 1917, in Clayton, a daughter of Claude and Laura Garnsey Hutchinson, she attended Clayton schools and was married to Joseph M. Cerwins Nov. 24, 1938, in Clayton.  The marriage ended in divorce.

    She was married to Leonard Nuijens Dec. 26, 1973, in Watertown.

    Mrs. Nuijens was employed as a cashier at various supermarkets in Clayton, most recently by Consaul's Grocery.  She was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church, Dexter American Legion Post 583 and was a past member of the Clayton
Order of the Eastern Star.
