Obituary (from newspaper of 16 Feb. 1971):  CLAYTON---William S. Pettit, 89, of 626 John St., long associated with St. Lawrence businesses, died at 10 p.m. Sunday in Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he was admitted Friday.  He
had been ill two weeks.

    The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Rev. Kenneth D. Reynolds, pastor of the Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.  Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

     Friends may call the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday.  Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Aletha Turcotte Pettit; three daughters, Mrs. Clifton H. (Marjorie)Good, Clayton, Mrs. William H. (Natalie) Gulledge, Honolulu, Hawaii, Mrs. Charles C. (Mabel) Ludwig, Jamestown; a son, William J., Jamestown;
eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    A sister, Mrs. Lulu Murdock of Clayton, died last Dec. 28, aged 87.

    Mr. Pettit was born Oct. 21, 1881, on Grindstone Island, one of two children of Marcus and Cynthia Sturdevant Pettit.  He attended school on the island and had spent his entire life in this vicinity.

    As a young man, he was employed at the Picton Island granite Quarry, then as a sailor on the Great Lakes, later on steamboat lines on the river, and next as boatman for the Murray and Wood families.  He was an employe of the Standard Oil
Co. 30 years, operating a boat for fuel delivery to the islands until his retirement.  He piloted river tour boats two seasons.

    Mr. Pettit married Miss Aletha Turcotte, also a native of Grindstone Island, April 3, 1907, in Christ Episcopal Church, Rev. M. J. Hoffman, then rector, officiating.  In celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in 1957, the family
made them a gift of a trip to Hawaii.

    Mr. Pettit was a member of Clayton Lodge 296, F. & A. M., 66 years, and a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church.


Aletha TURCOTTE

Obituary:  Mrs. Aletha Pettit, 90, of 626 John St., Clayton, widow of William S. Pettit, died April 8 in the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where she had been a patient since March 29.

    The funeral was Thursday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, with Rev. Richard Barton, pastor, Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial was in Clayton Cemetery.

    She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Clifton H. (Marjorie) Good, Clayton, Mrs. Natalie Gulledge, Honolulu, Hawaii, wife of Dr. William Gulledge, and Mrs. Charles C. (Mabel) Ludwig, Beamus Point; a son, William J., Jamestown; 10
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Garnsey and Mrs. Verna Dwyer, both of Clayton, and a brother, Erwin Turcotte, Clayton.

    Born Nov. 22, 1884, on Grindstone Island a daughter of Joseph and Clara Fowler Turcotte, she attended island schools and was married to William S. Pettit April 3, 1907, in Christ Episcopal Church, Clayton.

    Mr. Pettit, a 30-year employee of the Standard Oil Co., operating a boat for fuel delivery to the islands, died Feb 14, 1971, at the age of 89 years.


Robert W. GARNSEY

Obituary:  CLAYTON---The funeral for Robert W. Garnsey, 81, who died Friday in Watertown was Monday morning at the United Methodist Church with Rev. James E. Leland officiating.  Burial was on Grindstone Island.

    Surviving are his wife, Clara O. Turcotte Garnsey; a son, Lawrence C.; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Matthews and Mrs. Pauline Hunneyman; twelve grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a half-brother, David, and
four half-sisters, Mrs. Alice Carnegie, Mrs. Dorothy Carnegie, Mrs. Katie Hallet, Lodi, and Mrs. Bertha Backus, Sackets Harbor.  A son, Clarence W., died in 1958.

    Mr. Garnsey was born May 22, 1887, on Grindstone Island, son of Hubbard and Alice Murdock Garnsey.  On Aug. 24, 1905, he married Miss Turcotte.

    Mr. Garnsey operated a farm on the island and carried mail by boat for more than 23 years and transported school children for 18 years.  He was town of Clayton tax collector for two years and assessor for six years.  He was also manager of
Grindstone Cheese Factory for 18 years.


Clara O. TURCOTTE

Obituary (from newspaper of Monday, 13 Feb. 1989):  CLAYTON---Clara C. Garnsey, 100, formerly of Grindstone Island and Clayton, widow of Robert W. Garnsey, died at 4:45 this morning at the United Helpers Cedars Nursing Home, Ogdensburg, where
she had been a resident since April 23, 1979.

    The funeral will be Friday at a time to be announced, at the Cummings Funeral Home.  Spring burial will be on Grindstone Island.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Florence E. Matthews and Mrs. Pauline R. Hunneyman, both of Clayton; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Verna Dwyer, Clayton, and many nieces, nephews
and cousins.

    Two sons, Lawrence G. and Clarence W. Garnsey, died before her.  Two brothers, Edwin K. and Irwin J. Turcotte, and a sister, Aleatha Pettit, also died previously.

    Born on Grindstone Island on Dec. 21, 1888, a daughter of Joseph and Clara Fowler Turcotte, she was educated in schools on Grindstone Island.

    She married Robert W. Garnsey Aug. 24, 1905, at the Grindstone Island Methodist Church.  Following their marriage, the couple operated a farm on Grindstone Island, before moving to Clayton in 1943.

    Mr. Garnsey also carried the mail to and from Grindstone Island by boat for more than 23 years.  A native of Grindstone Island, he died Oct. 18, 1968.  He was 81.

    Mrs. Garnsey, a housewife, was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church and a former member of the Clayton Order of the Eastern Star.

Ada L. TURCOTTE

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 7 Aug. 1963):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Ada L. Turcotte Holloway, 67, wife of Earl C. Holloway, died at 11:20 p.m. yesterday at her home, 236 Webb St.  She had been ill ten years with a blood condition, and had
been hospitalized several times in Syracuse and Watertown.

    The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, with Rev. Dean Shaw, pastor of Clayton Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

    Surviving Mrs. Holloway, besides her husband, are two brothers, Irwin J. Turcotte and Edwin K. Turcotte, both of Clayton; three sisters, Mrs. William (Aletha) Pettit, and Mrs. Clifford (Verna) Dwyer, both of Clayton, and Mrs. Robert
(Clara) Garnsey, Clayton and Grindstone Island.  There were no children.

    Mrs. Holloway was born Aug. 16, 1896, on Grindstone Island, a daughter of Joseph and Clara Fowler Turcotte.  She spent most of her life in this area. After the death of her first husband, Ernest McFadden, she was married to Earl C.
Holloway Aug. 1, 1942, in Bethany Methodist Church parsonage, Watertown, by Rev. Dr. Paul R. Eberly, then pastor.

    Mr. Holloway retired from the New York Air Brake Company, Watertown, in April, 1958, after 22 years there.  He was employed mostly in the blacksmith shop and hardening room.

Jessie M. MCRAE

Obituary (from newspaper of Sunday, 4 Oct. 1987):  CLAYTON---Jessie M. Turcotte, 86, formerly of Riverview Apartments, died Saturday at the Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home, Watertown, where she had been a patient since 1985.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of the 1000 Islands, with Rev. G. Kent Walmsley, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    There are no calling hours.  Arrangements are with T.R. Jetty Funeral Home Inc.  Donations may be made to the memorial fund of the First Baptist Church of the 1000 Islands.

    Surviving are two sons, Donald I., a trustee of the Clayton Village Board, and Joseph M., both of Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Howard (Elaine) Hill, East Aurora, and Mrs. Lionel (Sally) Radley, Cape Vincent;  16 grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

    A brother, James McRae of Clayton, and two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Fitch, Clayton, and Miss Theresa McRae, Grindstone Island, died previously.

    Born on May 28, 1901, on Grindstone Island, daughter of Thomas and Delia Huitchinson McRae, she attended Grindstone Island schools and Albany Teaching College.

    She married Irwin Turcotte on Dec. 28, 1920, on Grindstone Island, Mr. Turcotte, a carpenter and caretaker on Grindstone Island, died Dec. 10, 1978.  Mrs. Turcotte worked as a cook on Grindstone Island for many years.
