Jessie S. GARNSEY

Obituary :  CLAYTON, March 25--Mrs. Jessie S. Garnsey Schnauber, 76, widow of William J. Schnauber, died at 3:10 this morning in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she had been admitted at 7:45 last night.

    She had been in poor health three months.

    The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Cummings funeral home with Rev. Frank I. Smith, Methodist minister at Norwood, formerly of LaFargeville and Depauville, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence cemetery, town of Cape
Vincent.

    Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 and Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Mrs. Schnauber is survived by a son William, Clayton; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Baldwin, Clayton; a stepson, Vernet Schnauber, Depauville; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Florence Comins, Clayton.

    Mrs. Schnauber was born Oct. 23, 1884, in the town of Clayton, a daughter of Eugene and Martha Bass Garnsey.

    She was a lifelong resident of this area.

    She was twice married, first to Miney Edmonds.  After his death, she was married to William J. Schnauber Dec. 25, 1917.  He died in December, 1926.

    Mrs. Schnauber was a member of the grange, and a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Depauville.

Clarence D. DWYER

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 9 Nov. 1978):  CLAYTON---Clarence J. Dwyer, 88, Clayton, R.D. 2, died Sunday evening at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown.

    The funeral was Wednesday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Watertown.  Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

    Mr. Dwyer is survived by a son Horace, Clayton; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Burnham, Liverpool; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.  A brother, Earl, and a son, Clifford, died previously.

    Mr. Dwyer was born Jan. 6, 1890 at Clayton, a son of John and Hattie Dodge Dwyer.  He married Rose Garnsey Sept. 18, 1912.  She died Jan. 15, 1957.

    Mr. Dwyer was a farmer and self-employed carpenter and electrician.


Henry Harrison COMINS

Obituary (from newspaper of 24 May 1978):      CLAYTON---H. Harrison Comins, 89, Clayton, Route 2, Adams Road, died at 6:05 this morning at the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.  He had been in failing health since suffering a stroke
in July 1977.

    The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent.

    Calling hours are Friday from 3:30 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Florence Garnsey Comins; a son Gene, Chaumont; a daughter, Miss Flossie Irene Comins, Clayton; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

    Born in Clayton Nov. 22, 1888, one of 10 children of James and Addie Cornwall Comins, he married Florence Garnsey Feb. 1, 1913, in Depauville.  He owned and operated a farm for several years.

    He was a member of the Grange.


Florence GARNSEY

Obituary (from newspaper of Tuesday, 28 Jan. 1986):  CLAYTON---The funeral for Mrs. Florence G. Comins, 89, Route 2, widow of Harrison H. Comins, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the T. R. Jetty Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Austin, pastor of the
Clayton United Methodist Church officiating.  Spring burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

    Donations may be made in her name to the Clayton Volunteer Amublance Fund.

    She is survived by a son, Eugene (Gene), Chaumont; a daughter, Miss Flossie Comins, Clayton, Route 2; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.  Two brothers, Ernest and Harry Garnsey and two
sisters, Mrs. William (Jessie) Schnauber, and Mrs. Clarence (Rose) Dwyer, died before her and a great-grandchild, Howard Smith, died in a snowmobile accident in 1979.

    Born June 6, 1896 in the Town of Clayton a daughter of Eugene and Martha Bass Garnsey, she married Harrison H. Comins Feb. 1, 1913 at the Depauville United Methodist Church parsonage.

    She worked as a seamstress at the Hawn, later Johnstown, Knitting Mill, from 1927 to 1970.

    Mr. Comins, who had operated farms in the Clayton section, died May 24, 1978.

    Mrs. Comins was a former member of St. Lawrence Corners United Methodist Church and the St. Lawrence Corners Grange.


Grace G. "Aunt Grace" PHILLIPS

Obituary (from newspaper of Tuesday, 29 May 1997):  FISHERS LANDING---Grace G. "Aunt Grace" Phillips, 92 of 42191 Arcadia Park, died Monday morning at her home.

    Mrs. Phillips was an assembler and a film inspector at Eastman-Kodak Co., Rochester, for many years, retiring June 6, 1969.

    She and her husbands had spent summers at Arcadia Park and she returned to the area in early 1990.  She had worked at Village Greenhouses, Clayton, until her death.

    Born June 6, 1904, in Clayton, daughter of Grant D. and Mary Leiderman Phillips, she was educated in Clayton schools.

    She married Harry Garnsey on July 25, 1931, in Clayton.  Mr. Garnsey, an employee of General Motors, died Oct. 30, 1960.  She married Earl P. Phillips on May 16, 1965, in Rochester.  Mr. Phillips, a car dealer in Spencerport, died June 16,
1978.

    Surviving are two sisters, Mildred P. Garnsey, Clayton, and Ruth Paolini, Sarasota, Fla., and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

     A brother, Herbert L. Phillips, and two sisters, Florence M. Kittle and Mabel Ainsworth, died before her.

    A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Grove Place Cemetery, Chili.

    Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.

Clarence H. RUSSELL

Obituary:  CLAYTON---Clarence H. Russell, 69, of Watertown Road, Clayton, died unexpectedly in his home Sunday morning.

   The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church, with Rev. Richmond N. Hutchins, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Friends may call at Cummings Funeral Home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving Mr. Russell are six cousins: Gerald F. Russell, Clayton; Phillip Russell, Binghamton; Mrs. Arthur (Nellie) Gelgarde, Albany; Mrs. Clara Vrouman, Albany; and Mrs. John (Esther) Russell and Mrs. William (Sue) Smay, both of
Binghamton.

    His wife, Mrs. Myrtle Rickett Russell, died Oct. 5, 1961.  A son, Pfc. Kent E. Russell, was lost in the English Channel, Dec. 25, 1944.

    Mr. Russell was born on Grindstone Island, July 14, 1898, a son of Hiram and Florence Black Russell.  He attended schools at Grindstone and Clayton.

    He had been a retired farmer and had also worked for Frink Sno Plow, Inc.

    Mr. Russell was a member of Clayton Lodge 296, F. & A. M. and the U.S. Power Squadron.


Myrtle RICKETT

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of Thursday, 5 Oct. 1961):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Myrtle Russell, 69, upper James St., and wife of Clarence H. Russell, died this morning at 6:30 in the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where she had
been admitted yesterday afternoon after a fall at her home.

    Mrs. Russell suffered a broken arm in the fall, but death was attributed to a coronary occlusion.

    The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at 2 at Christ Episcopal Church, Rev. William S. Cooper, rector, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9, and Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Bearers are Joseph A. Cambitz, Col. Howard E. Cobb, (ret.), Attorney E.J. Carter, S. Gerald Ingerson, Stanley J. Hungerford, and Kenneth D. Halladay.

   A son, Kent E. Russell, an army private in Company F, 262nd Infantry, 66th Division, was killed Dec. 25, 1944, when an American transport carrying troops to Europe was sunk.

    Mrs. Russell was born Dec, 26, 1891, in the town of Lyme, daughter of Clarence and Vernie Hill Rickett.  She attended Three Mile Bay schools and Casenovia seminary.  She had been a resident of this area all her life.

    On Sept. 1, 1917, Mrs. Russell was married to Clarence H. Russell at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Watertown.

    She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a past matron of the Clayton Eastern Star, and of the auxiliary of the Colon-Couch Post, American Legion.
