Emmett G. CALHOUN

Obituary:  CLAYTON---Nov. 19, 1958---Emmett C. Calhoun, 89, one time Great Lakes sailor, later co-owner of Clayton Boat Line, Inc., and operator until 1950 of a passenger and mail boat service to Grenell Island, Murray Hill, Thousand Island
Park, Fine View, and Frontenac, died this morning at 3:20 at the Schriver Nursing Home, Omar, where he had been a patient two and a half years.

    Mr. Calhoun had been in failing health for the past three and a half years.

    The funeral will be Friday at 10:45 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, and at 11 at Clayton Methodist Church, Rev. Russell E. Little, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.  The family has requested that flowers be omitted.

    Surviving Mr. Calhoun are his daughter, Mrs. Francis H. (Helen) Blake, Clayton; two granddaughters, Mrs. Roswell Flower (Nancy) Taylor, jr., 345 Paddock St., Watertown, and Mrs. John R. (Catherine) Kellogg, Clayton, and six
great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Calhoun was born Feb. 14, 1869 on Grindstone Island, the son of Samuel J. and Nancy Clarke Calhoun.  He was educated on Grindstone Island and employed while a young man as a sailor on Great Lakes vessels.

    Mr. Calhoun was married to the former Miss Margaret McIntosh May 25, 1899 in a ceremony performed in Clayton Methodist Church by Rev. Albert Danforth, then pastor.  Mrs. Calhoun died Feb. 2, 1950 at their home in this village.

    For 40 years, Mr. Calhoun lived in the village.  The family lived on Merrick St. until Mrs. Calhoun died in 1950.  From then until the time Mr. Calhoun entered the nursing home, he resided with his daughter, Mrs. Blake, Huginun St.

    In 1932, Mr. Calhoun became co-owner of the Clayton Boat Line, Inc., and was named president of the tour boat line in 1940, succeeding Frank G. Haas.  He later obtained the mail contract to deliver mail between Calyton and the islands
surrounding the village, and maintained a mail and passenger boat service in the islands area until 1950.

Helen Marguerite CALHOUN

Obituary (from newspaper of 2 May 1963):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Helen Calhoun Blake, 55, of 505 Hugunin St., widow of Francis H. Blake and lifelong resident of Clayton, died this morning at 9:15 at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she
had been a patient since April 21.  Mrs. Blake had been in poor health eight months.

    The funeral will be Saturday morning at 11 at the Clayton Methodist Church.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Mrs. Blake is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert T. (Nancy) Newcomb, 220 Schley Dr., Watertown, and Mrs. John R. (Catherine) Kellogg, Clayton, and nine grandchildren.

    Mrs. Blake was born on Grindstone Island Feb. 25, 1908, daughter of Emmett and Margaret McIntosh Calhoun.  She spent all her life in Clayton.  She was married to Mr. Blake on June 27, 1927, at the rectory of Asbury Methodist Church,
Watertown, by Rev. Mr. James Wilson.


Elise SCHMITT

Obituary (from newspaper of Friday, 1 Sept. 1989):  CLAYTON---Elise S. Kellogg, 77, South Main St., Newark, mother of Clayton resident John R. Kellogg, died Thursday evening in Newark-Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient since
Monday.

    There will be no funeral or calling hours.  The body will be cremated.  Arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Home.

    Surviving besides her son are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    Born at Alexandria Bay on July 23, 1912, a daughter of John A. and Ethel Thompson Schmitt, she was graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1928 and attended Syracuse University.
