Elmer Lewis HAAS

Obituary from newspaper of 20 March 1956:  The funeral for Elmer L. Haas, 66, of Depauville, who died suddenly Tuesday morning in a barn on the farm owned by his son, Keith L. Haas, on the Gunns Corners-Depauville road, near Depauville, will be
held at his home Thursday afternoon at 2.

    Rev. Frank I. Smith, pastor of the Depauville Methodist church, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Depauville cemetery.

    A Masonic service will be held at the family home tonight at 8 under the auspices of Depauville Lodge, 688, F. & A. M., of which he was a member.  Mr Haas was also a member of Depauville Grange, 59.

    Surviving Mr. Haas are his wife, Mrs. Iva Burgen Haas; five children, Elmereen W. Haas, Cato, N.Y., Mrs. Earl (Evelyn) Charlebois, Mattydale, W. Wilson Haas, Randolph, N.Y., Kent E. Haas, Fayetteville, and Keith L. Haas, Depauville, and
eleven grandchildren.

    Mr. Haas was found dead in the barn, near the entrance, late Tuesday morning, a few minutes after he had collapsed, evidently of a heart attack.   He had not been well for about two months.  He had gone to the barn earlier in the morning
to feed the young stock and had finished his chores when he was stricken.

    He was born June 19, 1889 at Depauville, a son of William and Violet Schnauber Haas.  A life long resident of Depauville and vicinity, he had been a farmer and truckman.

    For years he owned and operated a threshing machine and hay baler, conducting a business that took him to various farms in this section.

    Mr. Haas married Miss Iva Burgen June 14, 1913 in a ceremony solemnized at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Burgen of the Limerick road.  Rev. George Ernst, then pastor of the Chaumont Methodist church, performed the ceremony.


Iva Dean BURGEN

Obituary from Watertown Daily Times of Monday, 10 July 1961: DEPAUVILLE--Mrs. Iva Haas, widow of Elmer Haas, 70, died suddenly of a heart attack at 3:15 this morning at her home here.  She had suffered from a heart condition but had not been
confined.

    The body was removed to the Cummings funeral home, Clayton.  The funeral will be at the Haas home Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Frank I. Smith, pastor of the Methodist church in Norwood, officiating.  Burial will be in the Depauville
cemetery.

    Mrs. Haas is survived by four sons Elmereen W., Cato; W. Wilson, Randolph; Kent, Syracuse, and Keith, Depauville.  She is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Earl Evelyn Charlebois, of Cato; one sister, Aladabeen Burgen of Watertown, R.D.
4 and eleven grandchildren.

    She was born on June 19, 1891, town of Alexandria, the daughter of William D. Haas and Martha Buskirk Burgen.  She attended Dexter High school and had always lived in this part of the state.  She was married June 14, 1913 at her family
home in the town of Brownville, and her husband died March 20, 1956.

    She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 125, at Depauville, of the Depauville Methodist church, of the Women's society of Christian Service in that church, and of the Depauville grange.


Charlotte EASTON

Obituary:  Mrs. Charlotte Easton Haas, 78, widow of Carl J. Haas, and long a resident of Depauville, died near midnight Wednesday  at the Henry Keep home where she had lived since Feb. 21, 1961. She had been afflicted with arthritis for years.

    The funeral will be at the Henry Keep home at 10 a.m., Saturday with Rev. John J. Kelly, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Depauville cemetery.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

    Surviving are two brothers, Clifford Easton, Adams, and Harold Easton; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Easton Campbell, Philadelphia.  A daughter, Mrs. Marian Haas Schatz, died Aug. 20, 1959, at the age of 47.

    Mrs. Haas was born May 22, 1883 in Clayton, a daughter of Nathan and Martha Whittier Easton.  She was graduated from Clayton High school and Potsdam Normal school.  She taught in rural schools and later in the Brownville grade school.

    On June 29, 1910, she was married to Carl J. Haas, a native of Chaumont, at the home of her parents in Depauville by the late Rev. Fred Lewis, then pastor of the Depauville Methodist church.

    The couple lived on the Haas family farm in Depauville, where Mr. Haas had spent most of his life.  He operated the farm before the death of his parents, and continued until he retired in 1940.  At the time of his death, at the age of 80,
on April 16, 1958, he was a resident of the Adams-Henderson road.

    Mrs. Schatz, who was the couple's only child, was a teacher in the Watertown schools for years.  She had been graduated from Potsdam State Teachers college in 1932 with a major in music.  She taught in the grades of local schools and also
was in charge of elementary school music in the city system.

    Mrs. Haas was active in grange work in Depauville and was a Sunday school teacher for years in the First Methodist church, of which she was a member.
