Rachel DIXON

Obituary from newspaper of 23 Feb. 1927:  CLAYTON--Mrs. Rachel Bamford, 90, one of the oldest residents of Wolfe Island, passed away at the General hospital, Kingston, Ont., Feb. 16.  She was removed to the hospital about four weeks ago
suffering from a broken leg which she sustained as the result of a fall.

X-ray pictures were taken and the fracture reduced but due to her advanced age she gradually grew weaker until her death.

Mrs. Bamford was born at Stone Mills, N.Y., Aug. 22, 1836, the daughter of the late Robert and Nancy Dixon.  She spent her early life there moving with her parents to Wolfe Island when a young woman.  Here she married Devolson Bamford.
One son, Albert, was born to them.

Mr. Bamford died suddenly at an early age while serving as captain on one of the Great Lake vessels.  Later her son, Albert, who had reached the age of 21, passed away.

Mrs. Bamford spent practically her entire life on Wolfe Island living alone on her farm which was worked by her nephew, J. D. Bamford.  Three years ago she broke up housekeeping and went to reside with him.  The summer of 1925 she spent
with her only brother, W. C. Dixon and family of Clayton.  She celebrated her 89th birthday at his home and had planned to visit him again this summer.

Aunt Rachel, as she was called by all who knew her, was of a kind and generous disposition.  She was ever a friend to the needy and no one was ever turned from her door hungry.

Despite her advanced age, she was remarkably active and her memory was very acute.  She was a great lover of books and spent much time reading.  She took a keen interest in both current and political affairs.  She was perhaps the oldest
citizen on the Island to go to the polls last fall to cast her vote for her favorite party.  Although she was not a member of the church, she lived a devout, Christian life.

Her funeral, which was held Friday, Feb. 18, at the home of J. D. Bamford, and from the Methodist Episcopal Church was largely attended.  Among the floral offerings was a piece given by the Ladies Aid of which she was a member.  Mrs.
Bamford is survived by one brother, W. C. Dixon, sr., of Clayton, and several nieces and nephews.  Five of her nephews, Charles Dixon, William C. Dixon, jr., of Clayton, J.D. Bamford, George Woodman of Wolfe Island, Howard Halier of
LaFargeville and her brother, W. C. Dixon, sr., of Clayton acted as bearers.
