Martin SHELEY

Lucina

Obituary (from Watertown Standard of 14 July 1925):  THERESA---At her home in Commercial St., this village, occurred on Monday morning the death of Mrs. Lucina Sheley, aged 95 years.  Mrs. Sheley had been in good health for a person of such
advanced years, until recently when she failed rapidly.

    She was one of the oldest persons in this region.  She was born in Herkimer, and was married to James Sheley and they spent their early lives in this region.  Mr. Sheley was a cooper, manufacturing barrels, butter tubs, and washing
machines.  He finally drifted from the cooper's trade to building and contracting, and erected several residences here.  Her husband died several years ago and for the past 20 years or more she had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Place---first on the Brooklyn side and then, following the death of Mr. Place, she and Mrs. Place moved to their present home on Piety Hill.

    She was the last of a family of nine children, and she had one daughter who died in 1880.  She was the oldest member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this village.  The funeral services will be held at the home in Commercial St.
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. T. Wilson Carling, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church officiating, burial following in Oakwood Cemetery.


Leslie F. SHELEY

Obituary (from newspaper of Monday, 16 Nov. 1987):  CLAYTON---Leslie F. Sheley, 93, of 317 State St., was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.

    The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cummings Funeral Home, with Rev. Kathleen Adams-Sheperd, pastor of Christ Episcopal Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    There will be no calling hours.  Memorial donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Sheley and Mrs. Dorothy L. Riddler, both of Clayton, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Two brothers, Perry and Lester, died before him.

    Born Oct. 23, 1894, in Clayton, a son of Fred and Dana Windmill Sheley, he was graduated from Clayton schools.

    He married Elizabeth Bertrand on Dec. 6, 1916, in the Baptist Church parsonage in Watertown.  She died in February 1970.

    Mr. Sheley was employed as a caretaker for the Woodward family in Clayton for several years.  He also worked at Brooks Lumber Co. and for the Town of Clayton Highway Department, serving as highway superintendent for many years.

    He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Clayton Masonic Lodge and the Clayton Odd Fellows.


Elizabeth Mary BERTRAND

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 19 Feb. 1970):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Elizabeth Bertrand Sheley, 73, wife of Leslie F. Sheley, 317 State St., died Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, after a short illness.

    The funeral was Tuesday afternoon in the Cummings Funeral Home, with Rev. Richmond Hutchins, rector, Christ Episcopal Church, officiating.  Spring burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

    Besides her husband, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Brigham, Clayton, nieces and nephews.  A brother, George W. Bertrand, predeceased her.

    Born Nov. 24, 1896, in Clayton, a daughter of John and Mary LaChance Bertrand, she attended local schools and was married to Leslie F. Sheley Dec. 6, 1916, in the Baptist Church parsonage, Watertown.  Mrs. Sheley was a past member of the
Clayton Rebekah Lodge and a member of Christ Episcopal Church.  Mr. Sheley is a retired highway superintendent for the Town of Clayton.


George W. BERTRAND

1  CMNT Could Be Same As On P. 149 Of St. Mary's Church Records


Obituary from newspaper of 2 July 1965:  CLAYTON--George W. Bertrand, 70, native of Clayton and retired proprietor of Bertrand's Luncheonette in Poland, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of his son, Richard G. Bertrand, 607 James street,
where he had been visiting a week.

    The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Bertrand home, 607 James street, and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's church, with Very Rev. Msgr. Dennis E. Lynch, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton cemetery.

    Friends may call today at the Bertrand home.

    Surviving Mr. Bertrand, besides his son, are his wife, Mrs. Lena Derosia Bertrand; another son, John A., Utica; a daughter, Mrs. Neil (June) Thompson, Poland; two sisters, Mrs. Leslie (Elizabeth) Sheley, and Mrs. Ivan (Dorothy) Brigham,
both of Clayton; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

    Mr. Bertrand was born in Clayton, Dec. 7, 1894, a son of John and Mary LaChance Bertrand.  He attended Clayton schools and married Lena Derosia in Clayton in 1913 at St. Mary's church.  After their marriage, the couple lived in Clayton
until 1940, where Mr. Bertrand operated an express milk route between Watertown and Clayton.  In 194? they moved to Utica, where Mr. Bertrand had the Utica -Rome bus route.  They moved to Poland in 1952.


Lena DEROSIA

Obituary as found in 1,000 Islands Sun of 2 March 1970:  CLAYTON--Mrs. Lena DeRosia Bertrand, 73, Humphrey Gardens, Utica, formerly of Clayton, widow of George Bertrand died Friday morning in St. Lukes Memorial Hospital, Utica, where she had
been a patient since Feb. 3.

    The funeral was Monday morning at St. Mary's Church, Clayton.  Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Neil (June) Thompson, Poland; two sons, John A., Utica, and Richard G., Sr., Clayton; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

    She was born at Clayton May 22, 1896, daughter of Alex and Addie Myers DeRosia, and attended Clayton schools.  On Oct. 21, 1913, she was married to George Bertrand in St. Mary's Church by Rev. P.S. Garand.

    After their marriage the couple lived in Clayton until 1940, where Mr. Bertrand operated an express milk route between Watertown and Clayton.  In 1940 they moved to Utica, where they operated their own business until 1963.  Mr. Bertrand
died July 11, 1965.


Norman J. CALHOUN

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 20 July 1925):  CLAYTON---Norman J. Calhoun, 39, 800 State St., died at his home in this village Friday evening.  Mr. Calhoun had been ill for several years with tuberculosis.

   He was born in Fine View, Aug. 25, 1895, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Calhoun.  He spent all his life in this vicinity.  For several years he operated a charter boat at Thousand Islands Park and for six years he was a farmer in the town
of Clayton.  During the past two years, Mr. Calhoun operated a school bus in this village.

    Besides his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Fraser Calhoun of this village, he is survived by six children:  Merton, William, Charles, Vivian, Betty, and Ada, all of this village; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Calhoun, Chaumont; three sisters, Mrs.
Ivan Clark of this village, Miss Lena Calhoun of Albany, and Mrs. Paul Mitchell of Theresa; four brothers, Allie of Rodman, Vane of Watertown, Glen of Theresa, and Ora of Chaumont.

    The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 from the home.  Burial will be made in the Omar Cemetery.


Ella M. SWEENEY

Obituary (from newspaper of 1 May 1984):  The funeral for Mrs. Ella M. Calhoun, 62, of 411 Binsse St., wife of Merton Calhoun, who was stricken at her home about 7 p.m. Sunday and died at 3:25 Monday morning at Mercy Hospital, will be 11 a.m.
Wednesday at the Hart and Bruce Funeral Home with Rev. Benoit C. Dostie, pastor emeritus, Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, officiating.  Burial will be in Omar Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

    She is survived by her husband Merton; six sons, Norman E., Donald, Edward, John, and Norman E., Jr., all of Watertown, and Lawrence, address unknown; three daughters, Mrs. Wendell (Mary) Alberry, Brownville, Mrs. Jane Wolfe, Hammond, and
Mrs. Robert (Doris) Arnold, Antwerp; two brothers, Earl and James Sweeney, Syracuse; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Mims, Fitchburg, Mass.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Born Nov. 30, 1921 in North Lawrence, a daughter of Eli and Anna Hart Sweeney, she attended North Lawrence schools and married Merton Calhoun Aug. 9, 1941.

    The couple lived in Watertown all their married life.  Mr. Calhoun was associated with local trucking firms until he retired.

    Mrs. Calhoun worked as a waitress at the State Street Restaurant and worked at the Watertown Elks Club until retiring in 1975.

    She had been in failing health three years.
