Doris ROGERS

Obituary:  (from newspaper of 23 Feb. 1996)---Doris R. Smith, 81, of Olympic Apartments, died today at Samaritan Medical Center, where she had been a patient since Feb. 6.

    A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Cummings Funeral Home, with the Rev. Andrew J. Amyot, pastor of the Church of the Visitation, Norfolk, officiating.  The body will be cremated and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery,
Carthage.

    There will be no calling hours.  Contributions may be made to the Walker Cancer Treatment Center of Samaritan Medical Center.

    Surviving are a son, Jerrold C. Marshall, Sackets Harbor; a brother, Leo P. Rogers, Barnes Corners; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Collins, Watertown; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    A son, Robert L. Marshall, died in 1945.  Two brothers, Larry and Clarence "Bud" Rogers, and three sisters, Esther Florko, Loretta McPhail, and Eileen Schupenhower, also died before her.

    Born Oct. 22, 1914, in Trumansburg, daughter of William L. and Albina Truedell Rogers, she was educated in Watertown schools.

    She married Lawrence R. Marshall on June 25, 1929, in St. Mary's Church, Clayton.  The marriage ended in divorce.  She married Lance D. "Jeff" Smith on March 18, 1948, in Hyattsville, Md.  Mr. Smith, a long-time New York Air Brake
employee, died May 28, 1986.

    Mrs. Smith and her first husband lived in Clayton from 1929 to 1936.  The couple then moved to Washington D.C.,  where they lived for 11 years.

    During that time, Mrs. Smith was a hostess and assistant manager at St. Regis and St. James Restaurant, Pennsylvania Avenue.

    When she returned to Watertown, she was a machine operator at Faichney Instrument Co.

    She later returned to the north country, living in Natural Bridge, Watertown, Dexter, and Black River, finally settling at Olympic Apartments.

    Mrs. Smith was a former member of Brownville American Legion Post 588 Auxiliary.
