Estelle F. CRAIG

Obituary (from Town and Country News in the Watertown Daily Times of 15 April 1981):  The funeral for Mrs. Estelle F. Garnsey, 94, was held Wednesday, at the Clayton United Methodist Church, Clayton, with Rev. Robert F. Nay, pastor,
officiating.  Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent.

    Mrs. Garnsey, RD 2, died Sunday, April 5, 1981, in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Oct. 9, 1980.

    She is survived by a son, J. Donald Garnsey, Endwell; a daughter, Miss Eleanor M. Garnsey, Clayton; three granddaughters, Mrs. Carol A. Sterpe, Liverpool, Mrs. David H. (Clare) Coe, Trumble, Conn., and Mrs. Robert F. (Marilyn) Bullock,
Silver Springs, Md.; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

    Born in the village of Clayton on Aug. 30, 1886, a daughter of Thadeus W. and Eleanor F. Everest Craig, she attended Clayton schools.  She studied music and art at Potsdam Normal School and St. Lawrence University, Canton.

    She married John L. (Jack) Garnsey on March 30, 1901 at the home of her mother.  He died April 2, 1951.

    Mrs. Garnsey was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, Clayton, where she served in many offices.  She was a member of the WCTU of the church.

    She was well known for her paintings which have appeared in many exhibitions.


Eleanor M. GARNSEY

Obituary (from newspaper of Tuesday, 18 April 1995):  CLAYTON---Eleanor M. Garnsey, 82, St. Lawrence Road, died at 8:20 a.m. Monday at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan, Alexandria Bay, where she was admitted on March 31.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph DeGroot, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Union Cemetery, Cape Vincent.

    Calling hours were scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cummings Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to the Clayton United Methodist Church.

    Surviving are three nieces, Carol A. Garnsey, Liverpool, Mrs. David (Clare) Coe, Trumbull, Conn., and Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Bullock, Silver Springs, Md.; and numerous cousins including Elizabeth "Betty" Streets, Clayton, and Helen Parker,
Syracuse.

    A brother, J. Donald Garnsey, died on April 18, 1983.

    Born on Dec. 29, 1912, in Clayton, a daughter of John L. "Jack" and Estelle Craig Garnsey, she graduated from Clayton High School.

    Miss Garnsey was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Grange, the Alumni Association of Clayton High School, the Womens Society of Christian Service, the World Wildlife Fund, and 4-H.


J. Donald GARNSEY

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 12 May 1983):  CAPE VINCENT---J. Donald Garnsey, 74, Endwell, a Town of Clayton native, died April 28 after an illness of a year.  He had been blind for several years.

    Graveside services were held May 2 at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent, with Rev. Robert Nay, pastor of the Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.

    He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Bemis; three daughters, Carol, Clare, and Marilyn; a step-daughter, Delores, a sister, Eleanor Garnsey, St. Lawrence.

    Born in the Town of Clayton Sept. 30, 1909, a son of John and Estelle Craig Garnsey, he attended local schools and was graduated from Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, N.H.

    He was employed 14 years at the First National Exchange Bank of Clayton.  In 1942 he accepted a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Ithaca.

    He later moved to Sidney where he worked for the Bendix Aviation Co., until retiring.

    He was well-known in Masonic circles, having held the office of Grand Potentate. He was a former president of the Jefferson-Lewis Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and was past master of the Clayton Masonic Lodge, a past noble
grand and former treasurer of the Clayton Lodge of Odd Fellows and past patron of Calumet Chapter, OES.

    He was first married to Mae Stewart in 1931.


Robert L. GARNSEY

1  CMNT Lived On Grindstone Island At Time Of Death.


Obituary (from newspaper of 15 Nov. 1970):  CLAYTON---Robert L. Garnsey, 45, resident of Grindstone Island, died 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he had been a patient 12 days.

    The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton, Rev. Kenneth Reynolds, pastor, United Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be on Grindstone Island.

    Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

    He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elsie Kasacek Garnsey; a son, Robert, at home, and a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Magdel) Brown, Grindstone Island.

    Born May 1, 1925 in Watertown, son of Clarence and Nina Matthews Garnsey, he attended local schools.  At an early age he joined the Army for two years, followed by a 20-year hitch in the Navy where he served as a ship's welder, retiring in
the spring on 1966.

    He married Elsie Kasacek Jan. 31, 1953 in Storrs, Conn., and the couple lived in many different cities until his retirement, when they moved to their present home on Grindstone Island.

    Mr. Garnsey was a member of Colon-Couch Post 821 American Legion.

Lewis SLATE

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 14 April 1999):  ALEXANDRIA BAY---A funeral mass for Lewis E. Slate, 81, formerly of Westminster Park, Wellesley Island, was held Saturday at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas R. Driscoll,
pastor, officiating.  Burial was in Riverside Cemetery on Wellesley Island.

    Mr. Slate died Apr. 6 at E. J. Noble Hospital-Samaritan, where he was admitted Apr. 5.  He had been in ill health.

    Mr. Slate was once associated with his parents in farming and cattle dealing.  He was a longtime employee of the Thousand Islands Club, Wellesley Island, and retired from Crowley Foods, LaFargeville, in November 1982.  He also was a member
of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters AFL-CIO Local 388.

    He was a former Boy Scout committeeman and a member of Wellesley Island Rod and Gun Club, Friends of the Nature Center, Fineview, Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Association, Cape Vincent, and Thousand Islands Craft School, Clayton.  He also was
a longtime communicant of St. Cyril's Church and a member of the Perpetual League of St. Jude and the Monsignor Floyd J. Brown Society, Wadhams Hall Seminary-College, Ogdensburg.

    Born Nov, 25, 1917, in the Slate homestead on the family farm on Wellesley Island, he was the son of Sylvester C. and L. Mae Pike Slate.

    After his mother's death, his family lived with his father at the family homestead near the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands International Bridge.  The homestead burned in the 1980s, and part of the property also became the sites of
Anchor Motor Freight Inc. and Outer Point cottage development.

    He married Catherine E. Yaddow, a native of Massena, on June 12, 1944, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Massena, with the Rev. Daniel F. Lyddy, officiating.  The couple owned a home at Westminster Park for more than 43 years and moved to
their present home between Alexandria Bay and Clayton in 1988.

    Surviving besides his wife are a son, Bernard E., Harrisville and Wellesley Island; a brother, Nelson R., Wellesley Island; nieces and nephews.

    A sister, Grace Slate, and three brothers, Sylvester C., Andrew J., and Edwin E., died before him.
