Francis L. MARSHALL

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 19 Aug. 1996):  CLAYTON---Francis L. Marshall, 91, formerly of Clayton and Florida, died Sunday morning in Old Hundred, Ithaca, where he had been a resident for six weeks.

    Mr. Marshall was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Clayton, becoming postmaster in 1963.  He retired Oct. 31, 1969, after 37 years of service.

    Born Oct. 14, 1904, in Clayton, son of James S. and Marguerite Moran Marshall, he was a graduate of Clayton High School and later attended draftsman school in Schenectady.

    He married Frances A. Schmidbauer Feb. 22, 1930, in St. Mary's Church.  At the time of their marriage, they were both employed at Warner's Knitting Co.

    The couple built the Maranan Motel at 606 Alexandria St., where they were owners and operators until moving to Florida in 1975.  Mrs. Marshall died June 15, 1985.

    Mr. Marshall was a former communicant of St. Mary's Church and a 74-year member of Clayton Knights of Columbus Council 350.  He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Nocturnal Adoration Society.

    Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ann "Unny") Mulvey, Ithaca, and Mrs. Raymond (Nancy) Horton, Orange Park, Fla.; two brothers, J. Milton and Lorenzo A. "Wren," both of Clayton; two sisters, Anastasia Johnson, Buffalo, and Mrs.
Charles (Elizabeth) Cipullo, Clayton; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

    A daughter, Mary Jane Mason, died in September 1989.  A sister, Marguerite Mason, and three brothers, John C., William R., and Patrick F., also died before him.

    A prayer service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cummings Funeral Home, followed by a 11 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Frances A. SCHMIDBAUER

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 17 June 1985):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Frances A. Marshall, 80, of 4916 Northwest 51st Ave., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., wife of former Clayton postmaster Francis L. Marshall, died Saturday at the Orange

Park Care Center where she had been a patient a short time.

    The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cummings Funeral Home here and 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

    She is survived by her husband, Francis L.; three daughters, Mrs. Henry (Mary Jane) Mason, East Satauket, Mrs. Richard (Ann) Mulvey, Ithaca, and Mrs. Raymond (Nancy) Horton, Orange Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; a brother, Hans
Schmidbauer, Weilheim, W. Germany; a sister, Mrs. Hans (Leni) Schuster, Weilheim, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Born Sept. 18, 1904 in Weilheim, a daughter of Johann and Franziska Kiechle Schmidbauer, she attended Weilheim schools and came to the United States in 1924 and lived in the Watertown section.

    She married Francis L. Marshall Feb. 27, 1930 at St. Mary's Church, Clayton.  At the time of their marriage they were both employed at the Warner Knitting Co.

    The couple built the Maranan Motel, 606 Alexandria St., and owned and operated it until moving to Florida in 1975.

    Mr. Marshall retired Oct. 31, 1969 after 37 years with the Postal Service.  He was Clayton postmaster from June 1964 until retiring.

    Mrs. Marshall was a communticant of St. Mary's Church and a member of St. Anne's Altar and Rosary Society.


James Milton MARSHALL

Obituary (from newspaper of Sunday, 16 March 1997):  CLAYTON---James Milton Marshall, 90, of 614 Alexandria St., died Saturday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he had been a patient since Feb. 28.

    Mr. Marshall was a caretaker at Club Island in the Thousand Islands and a boat refinisher for G. W. Mercier Inc., retiring in 1969.

    Born Dec. 11, 1906, in Clayton, son of James S. and Marguerite H. Moran Marshall, he graduated from St. Mary's High School.

    He married Marjorie I. Potter on Aug. 24, 1935, at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. George E. Racette officiating.  Mrs. Marshall, a seamstress at the Clayton Manufacturing Co. for 30 years, died Dec. 26, 1986.

    Mr. Marshall was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.  A life member and past grand knight of Clayton Knights of Columbus Council 350, he also held exempt membership in the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department.

    Surviving are two sons, James D., Ticonderoga, and Dennis J., Watertown; a brother, L. A. "Wren," Clayton; two sisters, Stacia Johnson, Buffalo, and Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth M.) Cipullo, Clayton; three grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Four brothers, Francis L., John L., Patrick F., and William R., and a sister, Marguerite Mason, died before him.

    A prayer service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cummings Funeral Home, followed by Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Thomas Driscoll, pastor of St. Cyril's Church, Alexandria Bay, officiating.  Burial will be in St.
Mary's Cemetery.

    Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marjorie I. POTTER

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 31 Dec. 1986):  CLAYTON---Marjorie I. Marshall, 70, of 614 Alexandria St., died Dec. 26, in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Dec. 11.

    The funeral was Monday at St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    She is survived by her husband, James; two sons, James D., Croton Falls, and Dennis J., Watertown; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Merritt, Watertown, and Mrs. Julia Bazinet, Auburn, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    She was born Oct. 1, 1916, in the Town of Orleans, daughter of Ulysses and Hattie Potter.  She attended local schools and Clayton High School and married James Milton Marshall on Aug. 24,  1935, in the rectory of St. Mary's Church with the
Rev. George Racette officiating.

    Mrs. Marshall was employed as a seamstress at Clayton Manufacturing for 30 years and later worked for Gould Inc. until her retirement in 1976.  She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of the St. Ann Society.


John L. MARSHALL

Obituary (from newspaper of Monday, 7 Oct. 1991):  CLAYTON---John L. Marshall, 80, of 632 Theresa St., boatman and fishing guide on the St. Lawrence River for many years, was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday afternoon at the Mercy Center for
Health Services, Watertown, after being stricken at his home.

    A prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cummings Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, parochial vicar of St. Mary's Church, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are a son, Thomas R., Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Suzanne) Turcotte, Clayton, and Mrs. Stanley (Becky) Innes, Snohomish, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Francis L. Marshall, Ithaca,
and J. Milton Marshall and L. A. "Wren" Marshall, both of Clayton; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Bettie) Cipullo, Clayton, and Mrs. Walter (Stacia) Johnson, Buffalo, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

   A brother, Patrick F. Marshall, died previously.

    He was born July 23, 1911, in Clayton, a son of James S. and Marguerite Moran Marshall.  He was a 1931 graduate of Clayton High School.

    He married Laura E. Patchin Sept. 5, 1934, in the rectory of St. Mary's Church with the Rev. George E. Racette, then pastor, officiating.  She died July 23, 1987.

    Mr. Marshall served in the Navy during World War II, seeing duty as a technician fourth grade.

    He was employed by Mrs. E. O'Neil Kane and Mrs. Susan Coleman on Round Island as a boatman and caretaker until his death.  He was also a fishing guide on the St. Lawrence River a number of years.

    Mr. Marshall was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.


Laura E. PATCHIN

Obituary (from newspaper of July 1987):  CLAYTON---Laura E. Marshall, 70, of 632 Theresa St., well-known area seamstress, wife of John L. Marshall, died July 23 at her home.

    The funeral was Monday at St. Mary's Church, with Msgr. Herbert Hannan officiating.  Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent.

     Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund or to St. Mary's Church.

    Surviving besides her husband are a son, Thomas R., Clayton; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Suzanne) Turcotte, Clayton, and Mrs. Stanley (Becky) Innes, Snohomish, Wash.; eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; two brothers, George

    Born in Newton, Mass., Oct. 30, 1916, a daughter of Roy B. and Sara Stevenson Patchin, she was a graduate of Clayton High School.

    She married John L. Marshall Sept. 5, 1934, at St. Mary's Church, with the Rev. George E. Racette, officiating.

    The couple had always lived at Clayton, where Mrs. Marshall was well-known for her seamstress work.  She was also a co-owner of St. Lawrence Tartans.

    She was a former member of the St. Anne's Society and a communicant of St. Mary's Church.


Patrick Fellows MARSHALL

Obituary (from newspaper of 11 June 1986):  CLAYTON---Patrick Fellows Marshall Sr., 73, John St., was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital June 4 after being stricken at his home.

    The funeral was Saturday at St. Mary's Church with Msgr. Herbert Hannan officiating.  Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Memorial donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund or Clayton Minor Hockey.

    He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two sons, Patrick F., and Michael, both of Clayton; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Brenda) Powell, Carthage; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Francis L., Florida, J. Milton, John
L., and L. A. (Wren), all of Clayton, and two sisters, Mrs. Walter (Stacia) Johnson, Buffalo, and Mrs. Charles (Bettie) Cipullo, Clayton.  A brother and sister died before him.

    Born in Clayton on May 1, 1913, son of James S. and Marguerite Moran Marshall, he attended Clayton schools.  He married Marjorie Palmer on Sept. 21, 1935, at St. Cecilia's Church rectory, Adams.

    Mr. Marshall was employed as a fishing guide on the St. Lawrence River for many years.  A former employee of the Antwerp Roofing Company, he worked as a self-employed contractor until 1977.  He also sold Prudential Insurance during the
1930s.


Lorenzo A. "Wren" MARSHALL

Obituary from newspaper of 27 Sept. 2002:  CLAYTON--Lorenzo A. "Wren" Marshall, 82, formerly of Clayton, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, where he had been a resident since March 22, 2001.

    Mr. Marshall, a World War II veteran, was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, 361st Fighter Squadron, from Jan. 17, 1942, to Nov. 16, 1945, serving in the European theater.  He received American Defense, Good Conduct, European-African-Middle
Eastern Service and World War II Victory medals.

    He was a caretaker at Grindstone island and a boat refinisher at G. W. Mercier, Inc. and for Robert Lashomb.

    Born Nov. 16, 1919, in Clayton, son of James S. and Marguerite H. Moran Marshall, he was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary's High School.  He married Kathleen A. Kane on Nov. 16, 1946, at St. Margaret's Church, Dorchester, Mass.  She died Nov.
1, 1974.  He married Ida L. Taylor Bazinet on Nov. 19, 1977, at St. Helen's Church, Chasm Falls, with the Rev. Eucid A. Marier officiating.

    He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, a member of Knights of Columbus Council 350, where he was a grand knight and past district deputy, and a 57-year member of Colon-Couch American Legion Post 821.  He enjoyed refinishing furniture
and was an avid Yankees baseball and Notre Dame football fan.

    Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Ann Marie Laymon, Los Angeles, Calif.; two stepsons and their wives, John J. and Mary Bazinet, Fayetteville, and William A. and Suzanne Bazinet, Broomfield, Colo.; a stepdaughter and her husband,
Golda Louise and Peter L. Mellon, Clayton; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Betty) Cipullo, Clayton, and Anastacia M. "Stacia" Johnson, Buffalo, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

    A son, Kevin B., died July 3, 1967.  Five brothers also died before him, William P. on May 19, 1978, Patrick F. on June 4, 1986, John L. on Oct. 6, 1991, Francis L. on Aug. 18, 1996, and James Milton on March 15, 1997.  A sister,
Marguerite Mason, also died before him.

    A prayer service will be at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Cummings Funeral Service, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with the Rev. Christopher C. Carrara, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the parish cemetery.  Calling
hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Donations may be made to St. Mary's Church Roof Fund, Mary Street, Clayton, N.Y. 13624.
