Walter J. MCCONNELL Jr.

Obituary (from newspaper of 28 Sept. 1997):  CLAYTON---Walter J. McConnell, 77, of 99 Sixth Ave., Ilion, a native of Grindstone Island, died Saturday in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion.

    For 22 years, Mr. McConnell owned and operated McConnell Builders, Ilion, retiring in 1973.

    Born July 24, 1920, on Grindstone Island, son of Walter J. and Cora M. Carter McConnell, he attended Grindstone Island schools and was an Army veteran of World War II.

    He married Evelyn M. Joy Jan. 30, 1942, in Watertown at the home of the Rev. Cassius J. Sargent with the Rev. Mr. Sargent officiating.

    Mr. McConnell was a member of Ilion Presbyterian Church, a life member of Ilion Veterans of Foreign Wars and Coldbrook American Legion and was a member of the Amvets.

    Surviving besides his wife are a son, Gary, Marcy; two daughters, Mrs. John (Wanda) Mroz, Mohawk, and Mrs. David (Shirley) Bardo, Ilion; a sister, Helen Timmerman, Clayton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.

    Two brothers, Harold and Robert, and three sisters, Edna Bishop, Florence Bowman, and Frances Garnsey, died before him.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fenner Funeral Home, Herkimer, with the Rev. David Jones, pastor of Ilion Presbyterian Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Ilion.

    Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    Donations may be made to the Herkimer County Hospice Memorial Program or the Ilion Ambulance Corps.


Evelyn M. JOY

Obituary (from newspaper of 15 Oct. 1998):  SACKETS HARBOR---Evelyn M. McConnell, 74, formerly of Sackets Harbor, died Saturday in Faxton Hospital, Utica.

    Mrs. McConnell had been living in Mohawk with her daughter, Mrs. John (Wanda) Mroz, Mohawk, and previously lived at 80 E. North St., Ilion.

    A resident of the Ilion-Mohawk area since 1960, she was a member of Ilion Presbyterian Church.

    Born Jan. 24, 1924, in Adams Center, daughter of Charles B. and Gladys P. Nichols Joy, she was raised in Sackets Harbor and attended Sackets Harbor High School.

    She married Walter J. McConnell, a native of Grindstone Island, on Jan. 30, 1942, in Watertown at the home of the Rev. Cassius J. Sargent with the Rev. Mr. Sargent officiating.  Mr. McConnell, who owned and operated McConnell Builders,
Ilion, for 22 years, died Sept. 27, 1997.

    Surviving besides her daughter Wanda are another daughter, Mrs. David (Shirley) Bardo, Ilion; a son, Gary, Marcy; a sister, Arlene Smith, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    A brother, Donald Joy, died before her.

    A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery, ilion.

    There are no calling hours.  Arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Herkimer.
