John W. MURDOCK

Obituary (from newspaper of Thursday, 8 April 1993):  CLAYTON---John W. Murdock, 75, of 529 Merrick St., died at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at his home after a long illness.

    A graveside committal service will be held in Clayton Cemetery later in the spring with the Rev. Joseph DeGroote, pastor of Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating.

    There will be no calling hours.  Arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are his wife, Alvera J. "Sis," and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    A brother, Donald, died in 1929.

    Born May 27, 1917, in Gananoque, Ontario, son of Wallace H. and Lulu Pettit Murdock, he graduated from Clayton High School in 1933 and from the Bentley College of Accounting and Finance, Boston, Mass., in 1938.

    Upon graduation from college, Mr. Murdock was employed as a bookkeeper by the American Thread Co., in New York City and by the Providence-Washington Insurance Co., Providence, R.I.  He then returned to Clayton and was employed as general
manager of International Boat Tours for 35 years.

    For the past 20 years, Mr. Murdock was also associated with Henry Paprocki of Clayton as a bookkeeper.

    He married Alvera J. Gushlaw Aug. 7, 1991, in Clayton.

    Mr. Murdock was a member of Masonic Lodge 296.


Alvera J. "Sis" GUSHLAW

Obituary (from Thousand Islands Sun of 26 Nov. 1996): CLAYTON---Alvira "Sis" Murdock, 58, 529 Merrick Street, died Nov. 23, at the Samaritan Medical Center where she was admitted on Friday.

    There will be a graveside service at the Clayton Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph DeGroote, pastor of the Clayton United Metodist Church, officiating.  There will be no calling hours.

    Donations may be made to the Clayton Ambulance Fund.

    She is survived by five brothers, Athol "Stub" Gushlaw, Alton "Butch" Gushlaw and Herman Gushlaw, all of Clayton; Ferris Gushlaw, Ashby, Mass.; Rudolph Gushlaw, Shirley, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Albert (Myrtle) Allard, Ashburnham, Mass.;
several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Born July 17, 1938 in North Bangor, the daughter of Herman and Marjorie Trim Gushlaw, she was educated in Clayton schools.  A marriage to Frank Kirkland ended in divorce.  She married John W. Murdock, Aug. 7, 1991, in Clayton.  Mr. Murdock
died Apr. 7, 1993.

    Mrs. Murdock worked as a cook in Clayton area restaurants, most recently the Thousand Islands Inn in Clayton.

   She was a member of the United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed crafts, especially doll making and knitting, and was an avid bingo player.


Clarence T. MAJO

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of Thursday, 29 Dec. 1994):  CAPE VINCENT---Clarence T. Majo, 83, of 265 S. Murray St., died Wednesday morning at the Samaritan-Keep Home, Watertown, where he had been a patient since Dec. 15.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kathleen E. Adams-Shepherd, rector, officiating.  Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

    Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Simpson-Cleveland Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or the Cape Vincent Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are his wife, Jessie; a son, David, Ayer, Mass.; three daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Carolyn) Fitzgerld, Henrietta, Janet Majo, Cape Vincent, and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Kelsey, Calcium; eight grandchidren; seven great-grandchildren,
and several nieces and nephews.

    A brother, Loren, died before him.

    Born Nov. 18, 1911, in Cape Vincent, son of Bruce and Lula Peo Majo, he attended local schools.

    He married Edith "Jessie" McConnell Dec. 3, 1937, at the Millens Bay Church.

    Mr. Majo was a self-employed coal dealer and truck driver for a number of years.  He also worked as a bulk milk driver for Harold Parks & Son Inc., Rutland, until his retirement in the late 1970s.

    He was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church and a former member of the Cape Vincent Volunteer Fire Department.


Edith "Jessie" MCCONNELL

Obituary (from newspaper of Monday, 3 April 1998):   CAPE VINCENT---Edith "Jessie" Majo, 79, South Murray St., died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday in the emergency room at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, after being stricken with a heart attack at
her home.

   The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kathleen E. Adams-Shepherd officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery later in  the spring.

    Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Simpson-Cleveland Funeral Home.  Donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or the Cape Vincent Ambulance Fund.

    Surviving are a son, David, Ayer, Mass.; three daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Carolyn) Fitzgerald, Henrietta, Janet Majo, Cape Vincent, and Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Kelsey, Calcium; five brothers, Leland "Peter" McConnell, California, Chester
McConnell, Watertown, Warren "Bucky" McConnell and Melzer McConnell, both of Mexico, and Calvin "Kelly" McConnell, Adams Center; four sisters, Wealtha Prior, Watertown, Jenny Brown, Three Mile Bay, Etta VanAlstine, Florida, and Aleatha Stewart,
Marathon; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    Three brothers, George, Albert, and Barney McConnell, and three sisters, Emma Straite, Doris Maloney and Lana Jordan, died before her.

    Born July 28, 1915, on Grindstone Island, daughter of Frederick and Edith Calhoun McConnell, she attended area schools and married Clarence Majo Dec. 3, 1937, in Millens Bay Church.  Mr. Majo died Dec. 28.

    Mrs. Majo was a waitress at the Carleton Hotel and later worked for the Buccaneer Motel.

    She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and its St. John's Guild.  She was also a member of  the Capers Senior Citizens Club, the Cape Vincent Improvement League and the Cape Vincent Election Board.


Loren MAJO

Obituary (from newspaper of Thursday, 15 July 1993):  CAPE VINCENT---Loren R. Majo, 72, Broadway, self-employed maintenance worker, died Wednesday afternoon in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown.

   Mr. Majo died of injuries he sustained when struck by a a car on July 8 while riding his bucycle on Route 12E in Cape Vincent.

    Jefferson County sheriff's deputies said he was riding his bike south on the right shoulder of Route 12E at about 12:35 p.m. when he turned left as if heading toward a driveway on the opposite side of the road.  In doing so, he veered in
front of a 1993 Cadillac driven by Marion W. Habecker, 69, Stony Point Road, deputies said.

    The motorist tried to avoid him, but her car struck the rear wheel of the bicycle, throwing Mr. Majo to the ground, deputies said.  No charges were lodged.

    The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kathleen E. Adams-Shepherd, rector, officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

    Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Simpson-Cleveland Funeral Home.  Contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.

    Surviving are a brother, Clarence, Cape Vincent; a nephew, three nieces, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

    He was born July 7, 1921, in Cape Vincent, a son of Bruce and Lula Peo Majo.  He attended local schools and worked on the family dairy farm in the town of Cape Vincent until his father's death in 1950, at which time the family sold the
farm and moved to the village of Cape Vincent.

    Mr. Majo was self-employed as a maintenance worker in Cape Vincent.

    He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.


Chester W. MCCONNELL

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of Thursday, 11 Feb. 1999):  The funeral for Chester W. McConnell, 79, of 807 Morrison St., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.  Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery.

    Mr. McConnell died Wednesday morning at his home, after a long illness.

    Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

    Mr. McConnell was a self-employed carpenter and did home repairs in the Watertown area all his working life.

    He enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing.

    Born Aug. 24, 1919, in the town of Cape Vincent, son of Frederick and Edith Calhoun McConnell, he served in the Army during World War II.

    He married Kathryn Haggerty on March 2, 1940, in Rodman.  She died Jan. 8, 1998, in Watertown.

    Surviving are a son, Chester W., Jr., Watertown; four brothers, Leland, Lomita, Calif., Warren, Fernwood, Calvin, Rodman, and Melzer, Mexico; three sisters, Wealtha Prior, Watertown, Etta Van Alstyne, Brownville, and Aleatha Stewart,
Marathon; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    Three brothers and five sisters died before him.


Kathryn HAGGERTY

Obituary (from newspaper of 5 Jan. 1998):  Kathryn E. McConnell, 77, of 807 Morrison St., died at 3:51 p.m. Saturday at Samaritan Medical Center, where she was admitted earlier that day.

    She was a homemaker.

    Born July 25, 1920, at Three Mile Bay, a daughter of Peter and Jessie Webber Haggerty, she was educated in Three Mile Bay and Chaumont schools.

    She married Chester W. McConnell March 2, 1940, at the Congregational Church parsonage in Rodman.

    Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Chester W. Jr., Watertown; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    A son, Frederick M., died in 1943.  A daughter, Kathryn L., died in 1942.  Brothers and sisters also died before her.

    The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.  Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery.
