Obituary (from newspaper of 5 Aug. 1953):  CLAYTON---Edward John Marshall, 80, a native of Clayton and retired carpenter who built many houses on Grindstone Island and in this village, died at his home on John St. at 11 p.m. last night.  He had
been in failing health for five years and had been confined to bed by strokes for six months.

    Funeral services will be held at the Cummings Funeral Home here Thursday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Solomon A. Card, jr., pastor of Clayton Methodist Church, officiating.  A Masonic committal service will be held at Clayton Cemetery following
the funeral.

    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gladys E. Garnsey Marshall; two sons, Gerald G. Marshall and Harold Marshall, both of Clayton; five grandchildren, Harold, Gerald, Edgar, Mrs. Geraldine Cutler, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mrs. Lewis (Mary Elaine)
Constantino, Clayton, and three great-grandchildren.

    Mr. Marshall was born Sept. 24, 1872, at Clayton, a son of Edgar John and Mary Robbins Marshall.  He was educated at local schools and as a young man built houses on Grindstone Island with his father.

    He married Miss Gladys E. Garnsey, daughter of George F. and Emoratta Chase Garnsey of Clayton, Sept. 6, 1898, in the Clayton Methodist Church.  The couple lived for 48 years in Clayton where Mr. Marshall continued to work as a carpenter
until he retired a few years ago.

    He was a member of Clayton Lodge 296, F. and A. M. and for more than 45 years a member of the Clayton volunteer fire department.


Gladys M. GARNSEY

Obituary (from Watertown Daily Times of 10 July 1964):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Gladys M. Marshall, 84, widow of Edgar J. Marshall, 321 John St., died at her home Thursday at 8:05.  She had not been well for a year and had been confined to her home for
six months.

    The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Clayton Methodist Church, with Rev. Dean P. Shaw, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be at Clayton Cemetery.

    Friends may call at the Cummings Funeral Home this evening from 7 to 9 and Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Mrs. Marshall is survived by two sons, Harold H., and Gerald G., both of Clayton; a sister, Mrs. Malcolm (Lulu) Cummings, Clayton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

    She was born April 24, 1880, a daughter of Frank and Emmoretta Chase Garnsey, at Grindstone Island.  She attended schools there and lived in this vicinity all her life.

    She was married to Edgar J. Marshall at the Clayton Methodist Church on Sept. 6, 1898.

    Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Clayton Methodist Church and Eastern Star.


Amoretta M. CHASE

Obituary (from newspaper of 24 Dec. 1935):  CLAYTON---Mrs. Amoretta Chase Garnsey, 87, died about 4:30 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Miss Eva Garnsey, 541 Merrick St., this village, following an illness of over a year.  She had been
seriously ill for the past two weeks with neuritis.

    She was born in LaFargeville, May 6, 1848, a daughter of John and Rosela Howe Chase.  When a child she moved with her parents to Grindstone Island where she spent most of her life.

    She was married to George F. Garnsey at Clayton about 69 years ago.  They returned to Grindstone Island where Mr. Garnsey operated a farm until his death in 1917.

    She then moved to Clayton to reside with her daughter.  She had been totally blind for 15 years as a result of cataracts.  She was a member of the Clayton Methodist Episcopal Church.  Despite her blindness she had been able to do much
housework until a year ago.

    She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Celia Turcott, Gananoque, Ont.; Mrs. John Russell, Mrs. Edgar Marshall, jr., Mrs. Burt Robinson and Miss Eva Garnsey, Clayton; one son, John Garnsey, Clayton; a sister, Mrs. Eva Kittle, Watertown;
two brothers, Willard Chase, Chippewa Bay; Edgar Chase, Watertown, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held from the home of her daughter, Miss Eva Garnsey, Clayton, Thursday, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Royal Fishbeck, pastor of Clayton Methodist Episcopal Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.


Ernest L. RUSSELL

1  CMNT Father's Nat. Rec. Says He Was Born 10 Nov. 1905


Obituary (from newapaper of 10 Oct. 1975):  CLAYTON---Ernest L. Russell, 70, of 405 Riverside Drive, retired proprietor of the Tip Top dinette here, died Thursday afternoon at 2:15 in the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he had
been a patient since Sept. 29.

    The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home here.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Corners Cemetery, Town of Cape Vincent.

    Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

    Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Marian R. Cornaire Russell; a son, Richard C. (Dick), Three Mile Bay; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Rosalie Barker, West Carthage; three half-sisters, Mrs. Esther Roach, Binghamton,
Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Maricle, Glen Aubrey, and Mrs. Leona McAvoy, Clayton.

    Born Oct. 8, 1905, at Clayton, son of John and Carrie Garnsey Russell, he attended local schools and was a life resident of Clayton.  He married Marian R. Cornaire Oct. 22, 1928, at the parsonage of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Rosiere.

    Mr. Russell operated the Tip Top Dinette for 38 years until closing the establishment Sept. 26 because of poor health.

    Mr. Russell was a former member of the Clayton Rotary Club and was organist for the Clayton United Methodist Church 15 years and also was organist for St. Mary's Church for years.


Marion R. CORNAIRE

Obituary (from newspaper of 29 Nov. 2000):  CLAYTON---Marion C. Russell, 91, formerly of Clayton, died Wednesday in Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.  She had been a resident of McAuley Hall, Genesis HealthCare, for five years.

    She and her husband, Ernest, owned and operated the Tip Top Dinette for 38 years, retiring in 1975.  The restaurant building is now the site of the town clerk's office and Thousand Islands Museum.

    Born Sept. 24, 1909, in Rosiere, daughter of Joseph L. and Clara F. Seeley Cornaire, she attended rural schools.

    She married Ernest L. Russell on Oct. 22, 1928, in the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church parsonage, Rosiere.  Mr. Russell was a well-known church organist and also played the organ for silent movies in local theaters.  He died Oct. 9,
1975.

    Mrs. Russell lived at Three Mile Bay for five years, then at the senior housing off strawberry Lane for 18 years, before entering Genesis.

    Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Rivers Russell, Clayton; five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

    A son, Richard, died in 1993.  Two brothers and three sisters also died before her: Wendell Cornaire in 1937, Ronald Cornaire in 1967, Doris Cornaire in 1940, Frances Howard in 1979 and Hilda Cardinal in 1991.

    The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at T.R. Jetty Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark L. Pierce, pastor of the Lake and River Parish of the United Methodist Churches, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape
Vincent.

    Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m Saturday at the funeral home.

    Donations may be made to Paynter Senior Citizens Center, Riverside Drive, or to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.
